â€Å"As far as I am concerned, the result is that I know nothing, for when I don t know what justice is, I ll hardly know whether it is a kind of virtue or not, or whether a person who has it is happy or unhappy† (Republic 354c) Plato presents Socrates as believing in the unity of the virtues, skeptical of those who, like Meno, wish to treat the virtues as distinct objects of inquiry in dialogues such as Laches, Protagoras, Meno, the Republic, and Euthyphro. I shall argue that in the various virtues is one essence (or ‘virtue’), as revealed in a conceptual search for definitional clarity and a metaphysical appeal to Form that encompasses innumerous virtues. I. For Socrates, an adequate definition will reveal the common quality that belongs to both all and only; and necessarily and sufficiently, instances of the virtue that is being defined. Freedom Of Speech And Censorship Essay What is the right balance to strike between freedom of and restrictions upon artistic expression? The commonly accepted definition of censorship- that certain texts, images, or films should be banned. The Laymans English Dictionary defines censorship as to examine books, films, letters etc, to remove anything that is considered offensive, morally harmful, or politically dangerous. Narrowing down the definition to cover The Arts scene in Singapore, the question beckons should anyone hue the power to place restrictions on an individuals freedom Of expression? One might liken that tying a gag over someones mouth! In a recent dialogue With Minister Mentor Lee (Friday, October 5th, 2007 Singapore: From Arts to censorship), students posted the view on the natural contradiction in censorship codes and Singapore efforts to promote artistic expression. MM Lee answered simply by suggesting that artists can find expression through many other areas without crossing the red tape. An individuals rights end when they impinge on the safety and rights of others. By enacting laws against pornography and other deviant sexual practices, we have accepted that freedom of expression should have limits. In addition, art, like any other form of free expression, should be subject to the same restrictions on an individuals treated of expression. To create a legal loophole for content such as racially intolerant speech, which could then seek protection on the grounds that it was a tort of art. Other content such as race, religion, violence, coarse language, nudity, homosexuality are less clear cut. However can one say that so long as no illegal acts were committed in the creative process, the public should have a choice in deciding whether to view the resulting content? In recent years (2002-2007) the level of Arts activities in Singapore has gone We have many more events in our annual Arts calendar, higher enrolments in our arts schools, larger number of Singapore who make the Arts a career or serious hobby. At the advent of Singapore Art scene in 2002, Mr.. David T E Limb, Acting minister for Information, Communications and the Arts. In summary, his views (the government views) the resultant stifling Of free expression outweighs the potential for exposure to unacceptable material. Censorship, even when age rating systems are used, is a very blunt tool. It takes no account of the differing standards of education or maturity between children and youths, or the varying attitudes towards parenting in different households. By imposing an external standard of censorship, the government is depriving parents of the right to raise their children in a manner that they see fit. We lose the element of parental discretion, which is arguably part of the right o lead a private family life as one sees fit a right that is enshrined in many international human rights conventions. The European convention Of Human rights, article 8 states that everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence. Looking at adults, one can see that they have the right to vote, bear arms, die for the country. Just Recently researchers were able to determine the damage to the ship by imaging the sunken liner with an acoustic device known as a sub-bottom profiler. They examined the ship's starboard side, finding a series of six thin openings along the hull. This implied that the iron rivets along the plate seams probably popped open creating small gaps for the water to come in. Two wrought-iron rivets from the Titanic's hull were recently hauled up for scientific analysis and were found to be riddled with unusually high concentrations of slag, making them brittle and prone to fracture. From the observation, researchers concluded that since these seams were roughly 20 feet below the waterline, there was an enormous amount of pressure from the seawater, which made it's way into the compartments very quickly. Navel Architects and marine engineers claim the Titanic was moving at an estimated speed of 22 knots before it collided with the iceberg. They believe if the Titanic was moving half as fast, the force of the iceberg's impact and the damage done to the plate seams would have been much less. Since the pressure would have been less, fewer compartments would have flooded and the possibility of survival would have been greater. There are still many debates over whether the Titanic was intact while it submerged under the ocean or it had broken into two pieces before descending to the bottom of the ocean floor. Some passengers testified to watching it breaking apart above the surface, while the ship's officer's testified that the vessel went down intact. The fact those eyewitnesses aboard the Titanic have different stories lead me to believe that the mystery of the unsinkable ship may never be solved. Every year expeditions will come up with evidence of another theory. Some theories will be justifiable, others will still be a mystery.

Analyzing Persian Gulf Crisis Between Iraq And Kuwait In analyzing the Persian Gulf Crisis originally between Iraq and Kuwait, one must first understand the factors that contributed to the conflict. In 1980, Iraq carried out a major air and land attack on Iran. For eight years, the Iran-Iraq War grew more intense, until the U.S. accidentally downed an Iranian plane, killing 290 passengers. Three factors contributed to this war: (1) territorial dispute, (2) religious disputes between Islamic moderates and fundamentalists, and more importantly, (3) a personality conflict (also known as ego-mania) between Saddam Hussein, Iraqs president, and Ayatollah Khomein, the leader of Iran. During this war, the U.S. began to provide protection to Kuwaiti tankers, and hence, resulted in military conflicts with Iranian speedboats. Indirectly, the U.S. supported Iraqs actions in this war. While the U.S. was busy protecting Kuwait, Kuwait supported Iraq financially by giving it more than $10 billion. At the close of the Iran-Iraq War in 1990, Iraq was ea ger to pay its international debt. But how? Iraqs chief export was petroleum. According to Iraq, Kuwait was providing a surplus of oil in the international community by exceeding it assigned OPEC quota. Furthermore, Iraq accused Kuwait of stealing nearly $24 billion worth of oil from a location straddling their border. With his back against the wall, Saddam Hussein demanded forgiveness of the debt and $13 to $15 billion in reparations. After little progress in two months, Iraq invaded Kuwait. Immediately after the invasion, the U.S. led a coalition of states determined to protect Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The Soviet Union was a part of this coalition. For the first time in history, the two superpowers were cooperating, rather than impeding, the Security Councils peacekeeping actions. Though the U.S. indirectly supported Iraq in the past, the Soviet Union ironically served as Iraqs principal supplier of weapons during the 1970s and 1980s. Now, the Soviet Union was teaming in a surprising joint initiative to liberate Kuwait form Iraq. This essay does not attempt to relabel Iraqs actions as just. It merely points out the false security blanket the U.S. and Soviet Union helped to give Iraq. They supported Iraq in a virtually pointless war with Iran, and when Iraq was drowning with the balance of the war and no life jacket its chief export petroleum the world teamed up against her. In any dispute, whether between children or countries, the peacemaker must indicate an understanding, not justification, of acts of war. Just as a child rebels against a parent that does not understand, a country does as such against a world that does not understand. Though the superior usually wins the fight, emotions and thoughts of retaliation only fester in the minds and hearts of the other victim of war. This statement cannot be stated at a more important time in history, as terrorist attack major landmarks in the United States. The offender seeks recognition of a cause. Do just that. Another impressive structure built by them was the Lioness Gate at Mycenae, which was built from large stones with carvings of Lions. These Lions symbolized the King for them. The function of the lions were to act as guardians of the gate. It is said that the Mycenae were Egyptian influenced of burial customs together with strong artistic inf luence form Crete. During 1944 in Florence Italy Leonardo Da Vinci painted his most famous portrait, the Mona Lisa. This is portrait was built from very thing layers of glaze, so thin that the entire panel seems to glow with a gentle light form within. The fame of Mona Lisa did not come from the picture alone. The most intriguing part of the picture comes from the sitters personality. The smile of the sitter has been singled out as the most mysterious. The face of the person is very individual and the Leonardo has brought out tow opposites of harmonious balance. The smile can be read in different ways.
